Case study: Africa land border

We delivered a data-led, digital border surveillance network for a remote land border region in Africa facing a rise in Islamic extremist violence. The solution was designed together with the client using our modular & scalable approach, rolling out in phase with the available budget.
Applying their specific knowledge of the ground and threat picture, the initial phase focused coverage around the official border crossing points. This maximized data collection of border crossings and provided visible security and deterrence.

The integrated, data-led border surveillance network incorporated:

Upgraded Border Crossing Points

Pre-fabricated units provide staff with secure working environments armored to NATO standards to process travelers. These integrate with fixed Tower Sensors to share infrastructure, security and biometric data collection.

Integrated Intelligence Infrastructure

Integrating data from Tower Sensors and Biometric Data Collection with data from existing systems (such as border watchlists) to create a single intelligence picture shared with civilian agencies and the armed forces.

Intelligence Fusion & C4I Centres

Multi-agency command and control centers using bespoke digital tools to make better decisions more quickly and safely. Applying a combination of technology and training to uplift performance to NATO standards.

Tower Sensors

Fixed and mobile towers track movement along the border collecting visual imagery, thermal imagery, EM spectrum, networked unmanned ground sensors, tethered UAVs into a single unit with edge processing to allow low-bandwidth communications.

Biometric Data Collection

Handheld interfaces, customized to local immigration processes and networked with intelligence infrastructure provided to border agents to enable local collection and interrogation of biometric data to the standards used by the UK & EU.
